In 2024, SAP announced plans to remove the deprecated Accelerator UI template extensions included with SAP Commerce Cloud beginning with the September 2027 update release. As of June 2026, SAP has reversed that decision, announcing that the deprecated Accelerator UI template extensions will not be removed from a future update release. This means that there is no longer a fixed de-release date, and customers will not be required to leave Accelerator UI or move to a headless storefront by 2027.
While SAP is backing away from a removal deadline, they are not backing away from a headless-first strategy. The change reflects a shift from deadline-driven transformation to customer-driven modernization, giving merchants more flexibility to align technology investments with business priorities and budget cycles while continuing to plan for the future.
Lowering the Barrier to Modernization
Rather than forcing customers to modernize against a specific deadline, SAP is shifting its focus toward making modernization easier and less disruptive. SAP highlighted several initiatives, currently in development, aimed at reducing the cost, effort, and complexity of modernization including:
- Accelerator UI Modernization Tool, which analyzes existing Accelerator UI implementations and automatically converts key components into API-based services and Composable Storefront experiences, reducing manual effort, time, and cost.
- Continuous Innovation Automation, including AI-driven modernization, notification and testing capabilities designed to simplify monthly and framework updates while helping customers stay current with less disruption.
- New Storefront Hosting Service, which completes the separation of storefront delivery from backend commerce services, enabling storefront teams to manage code, builds, and deployments independently.
The Future of SAP Commerce Cloud is Still Headless
Even though the fixed de-release timeline for Accelerator UI has been removed, it doesn’t change SAP’s long-term product strategy. Composable Storefront remains SAP’s strategic frontend approach, offering the flexibility and API-first architecture needed to support modern commerce experiences and future innovations. This point cannot be stressed enough. All future platform innovation will be tied to headless storefront architectures. While migration is no longer dictated by an arbitrary date, organizations that delay this process will find it increasingly difficult to add new features and functionality over time.
Headless architectures enable organizations to decouple the storefront from the commerce backend, making it easier to deliver experiences across channels, devices, and emerging interfaces while allowing teams to manage frontend and backend release cycles independently. This separation reduces regression overhead and enables teams to deploy storefront changes without backend dependencies.
A key driver behind this strategy is AI. SAP continues to position headless commerce as the foundation for AI-powered shopping assistants, autonomous purchasing agents, and other agentic commerce experiences. The company’s API-first approach also supports integrations through emerging protocols and services that enable AI systems to interact with commerce platforms.
While support for Accelerator storefronts remains in place, SAP notes that Accelerator-based architectures can lead to higher maintenance overhead, slower change cycles, and reduced agility over time. Organizations that modernize earlier will be better positioned to take advantage of future SAP Commerce Cloud innovations, including AI-driven and agentic commerce capabilities.
