SAP Commerce Cloud is continuing to make a strategic shift into the AI space, and the SAP CX AI Toolkit is at the forefront of this innovation.
Designed to enhance product content, customer engagement, and overall commerce intelligence, the toolkit offers powerful capabilities. We explored its features through hands-on testing and integrated it with the standard Powertools storefront to share our insights.
Unlocking AI-Powered Commerce
The SAP CX AI Toolkit marks a significant step toward intelligent commerce experiences. This toolkit is designed to embed AI-driven decision-making directly into SAP Commerce Cloud, helping businesses enrich product data, improve product discovery, and streamline operations. Businesses can anticipate customer needs, enhance engagement, and drive conversions more effectively all by leveraging machine learning models. The AI Toolkit can also be integrated with other SAP tools such as Sales and Service, Customer Data Platform (CDP), and even Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, extending its value across the CX landscape.
AI Toolkit Features in SAP Commerce Cloud
The SAP CX AI Toolkit introduces AI-driven features designed for product content management, front-end experiences, and marketing content generation. Below is an overview of its key capabilities:
Product Content Management (Synced to Staging Catalog):
- Automatically generates classification attribute values
- Creates and translates product descriptions
- Offers image editing tools, including background removal, overlays, and solid color placements
- Generates images based on prompts
Front-End Enhancements:
- Visual Search – Allows users to search using images which is then matched against the product catalog. This simplifies product discovery, especially for manufacturers and distributors with extensive catalogs. The toolkit provides a UI for testing and includes sample code for integration with SAP’s composable storefront.
- “Ask About This Product” Feature – Enables users to ask questions about a product, leveraging structured product data, PDFs, images, and other related content to generate responses.
- AI Shopping Assistant – Allows natural language to ask questions beyond a specific product to get recommendations based on given criteria. This is helpful when a customer might not be sure which product best meets their needs, especially when there are many complex products.
Generated Marketing Content:
- Create social media posts related to a product
- Generates blog posts focused on specific products
- Generates product banner text
Hands-On Experience: Insights & Observations
We conducted our initial testing of the AI Toolkit in our Ascend demo environment using the Powertools storefront. This hands-on evaluation provided valuable insights:
- Product Description & Attribute Generation – The toolkit enables the creation of product descriptions for individual products or in bulk using customized prompts. The translation functionality also supports all languages available in the commerce storefront.
- Limited Progress Feedback – Once connected to SAP Commerce Cloud, there is no visible progress indicator while importing products, requiring manual checks.
- Image Generation Challenges: The AI-generated images still need improvement, though the image editing features performed well.
- Smooth Data Syncing – AI-generated content, such as product descriptions, seamlessly synced back to SAP Commerce Cloud staged product catalog.
- Visual Search – Performed well in testing, allowing users to upload an image and initiate a search.
- “Ask about this Product” – This feature enables natural language queries on the PDP, delivering quick and accurate responses with references to source materials. However, its effectiveness in the Powertools storefront is limited by the available product data. Enriching product information with detailed attributes, manuals, warranties, and spec sheets would enhance its accuracy and value.
- Disjointed User Experience – Since the AI Toolkit is separate from SAP Commerce Cloud’s Backoffice, users must switch between platforms to generate and apply AI-driven content, which can be inconvenient.
- Intelligent Search – The toolkit currently lacks AI-driven search optimizations such as automated relevance tuning and AI-powered product recommendations.
What’s Next? The AI Toolkit Roadmap
SAP continues to innovate with an active roadmap for the AI Toolkit, bringing powerful new capabilities to digital commerce. Exciting enhancements on the horizon include a translation AI agent, which will automate product data translation, simplifying multilingual catalog management and supporting global expansion. These upcoming features will further elevate SAP Commerce Cloud’s AI-driven capabilities, empowering businesses with smarter automation, deeper personalization, and greater efficiency in digital commerce. Final Thoughts
The SAP CX AI Toolkit brings valuable enhancements to SAP Commerce Cloud, making it easier for businesses to manage and optimize product content. With seamless integration, it streamlines the creation of product descriptions, translations, and interactive features like Visual Search and “Ask About a Product,” improving how customers discover and engage with products.
Some features, like AI-generated images, are still evolving, and intelligent search capabilities have yet to be introduced. However, the toolkit provides a solid foundation for AI-driven commerce, and businesses can supplement these areas with existing tools as SAP continues to expand its capabilities.
With an active roadmap, the AI Toolkit is well positioned to deliver even greater value. Given its current strengths and future potential, it’s a compelling addition for businesses looking to integrate AI into their commerce strategy.
